The Northern Territory returns to women’s representative baseball for the first time in over a decade
Baseball Northern Territory is proud to announce the NT Buffaloes Women’s Team selected to compete at the Queensland Women’s State Titles (Division 2) from 12–14 December 2025 at Runcorn Indians Baseball Club in Brisbane. This marks the first women’s representative baseball team from the NT since 2013, when a composite Northern Territory side competed at the Australian Women’s Championships in Ballarat, Victoria.
The re-emergence of a women’s team represents a significant milestone for the Territory. In the years since 2013, women’s baseball has seen periods of limited access and pathways — making this return not only a sporting achievement, but a meaningful moment for the many women who have continued to champion the game across the NT. The growth of the Darwin Women’s Baseball League, along with ongoing development opportunities in Alice Springs, has seen female participation numbers increase steadily. This momentum forms the foundation of Baseball NT’s ongoing Women & Girls strategic priority, dedicated to creating sustained pathways for female athletes to train, compete, and progress at representative level.
Head Coach Gemma Scales will lead the 16-player roster alongside Assistant Coach Narelle Gosstray and Team Scorer/Executive Officer Christie Cann. The squad features a strong blend of emerging young talent and experienced players who have been instrumental in shaping the current women’s baseball landscape in the Territory.

Reflecting on the significance of the team’s return, Scales said:
“I’m so excited to be a part of this team. The leaps and bounds that women’s baseball has come since 2013 is reflective in this opportunity, and I’m honoured to play a role. We have built a wonderful community in the Darwin Women’s Baseball League and I can’t wait to share that with the wider baseball community.”
Speaking to the upcoming tournament, she added:
“I am looking forward to seeing the accelerated growth the group will experience that only comes with playing tournament ball. We have such fun personalities in the playing group and I’m expecting many, many laughs!”
Scales also highlighted several players to watch:
“Am Cann is a young one to keep tabs on. She brings heart and grit to her game, and is developing into a handy utility player. Rumer, Liz and Amy have come so far in their journeys and are a joy to have on the field. Keep an eye on their skills and an ear on their jokes!”
Baseball NT Participation & Pathways Manager Kai Meuronen noted the broader significance for Territory baseball:
“So incredibly proud to reintroduce a women’s representative team into our pathways structure. It’s a true testament to the development of the women’s game through initiatives like the Darwin Women’s League, the Emeralds visit to Alice Springs, increased participation at Barclay Cup, and the Australian Little League Girls Championships. Hopefully this is just the first stop on a much larger journey for our female NT Buffs teams.”
“We are also grateful to Baseball Queensland and Baseball WA for supporting our athletes and providing opportunities as we re-establish our own pathway.”
The NT Buffaloes Women’s Team will travel to Brisbane next month, proudly representing the Territory’s growth, spirit, and commitment to women’s baseball.
